Charge controllers are designed to protect batteries from overcharge and overdischarge, which can be
seriously
damaging to a lead acid battery.
The controller (aka regulator) is a key part of any energy system and the latest technologies are equipped
with some
highly advanced charging routines.
Many controllers use Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) Charging which does a much better job of charging
the batteries
than the simple on/off logic of older & simpler units.
However, MPPT (Multi Point Power Tracking) Controllers are currently setting the new standard in charge
controllers.
This type of controller maximises the amount of current coming out of the panels and going into the
batteries. In some
conditions, this can equate to an extra 30% of power.
